Building three-dimensional objects involves composing and decomposing solid shapes, especially cubes and rectangular prisms, into recognizable structures and describing how parts fit together in rows, columns, and layers. The learner connects physical or visual models to geometric properties such as faces, edges, and vertices, understanding that an object may look different when viewed from another perspective; formal volume calculations, nets, and scale models are not included.
Start by thinking of the object in layers. A layer is one level of cubes. In each layer, look for rows and columns.
Example: Build an object with 2 layers. Each layer has 2 rows, and each row has 3 cubes.
Build the bottom layer.
Place cubes in a row.

Place another row of cubes directly behind the first row.

The bottom layer now has rows and columns.
Build the top layer.
Place more cubes on top. Each top cube should sit directly above a bottom cube.
