Metric mass units form a scaled system: 1 kilogram equals 1,000 grams, and 1 gram equals 1,000 milligrams. Converting preserves the same quantity while expressing it in kilograms, grams, or milligrams, using multiplication or division by 1,000 and interpreting whole numbers, decimals, and fractions appropriately; the direction of conversion determines whether the numerical value increases or decreases. More advanced units and generalized conversion formulas are not included.

Detailed Explanation: Convert between metric mass units

Metric mass units are related by 1,0001{,}000:

  • 11 kilogram (kg) =1,000= 1{,}000 grams (g)
  • 11 gram (g) =1,000= 1{,}000 milligrams (mg)

To convert:

  • From a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply by 1,0001{,}000.
  • From a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide by 1,0001{,}000.

Example: Convert 3.53.5 kilograms to grams.

Since kilograms are larger than grams, multiply by 1,0001{,}000:

3.5 kg×1,000=3,500 g3.5\text{ kg} \times 1{,}000 = 3{,}500\text{ g}

So,

3.5 kg=3,500 g\boxed{3.5\text{ kg} = 3{,}500\text{ g}}

The amount of mass did not change; only the unit changed. The number became larger because grams are smaller units than kilograms.
