Skill: Identify even numbers

An even number can be split into equal pairs with nothing left over. Even numbers are also multiples of $2$.

For numbers through $100$, look at the last digit:

• $0, 2, 4, 6,$ or $8$ means the number is even.
• $1, 3, 5, 7,$ or $9$ means the number is odd.

Example: Is $46$ even?

1. Look at the last digit of $46$. It is $6$.
2. Since $6$ is one of $0, 2, 4, 6,$ or $8$, $46$ is even.
3. We can also show this with pairs:

$$46 = 2 + 2 + 2 + \cdots + 2$$

There are $23$ pairs of $2$, with nothing left over. Therefore, $\boxed{46\text{ is even}}$.
