Skill: Identify pennies

A penny is the coin worth one cent, written as $(1\text{¢})$.

To identify a penny:

1. Look for the words “ONE CENT” or the number 1.
2. A penny may show the front or the back. It is still a penny when it is turned over.
3. Its place in a group does not matter.
4. Each penny represents $(1\text{¢})$.

Example: Look at these three coins:

• Coin A says “ONE CENT.”
• Coin B says “FIVE CENTS.”
• Coin C shows the back of a penny with the words “ONE CENT.”

Coin A and Coin C are pennies because each is worth $(1\text{¢})$. Coin B is not a penny because it is worth $(5\text{¢})$.

So, there are 2 pennies, and their total value is

$$1\text{¢}+1\text{¢}=2\text{¢}.$$
