Skill: Identify possible outcomes

An outcome is what happens in a chance situation. To identify the possible outcomes, look at everything that could happen.

Example

A six-sided die has the numbers $(1, 2, 3, 4, 5,)$ and $6$. What are the possible outcomes when you roll it?

Step 1: Look at all the sides of the die.
The numbers are $(1, 2, 3, 4, 5,)$ and $6$.

Step 2: List every result that could happen.
The possible outcomes are:

$$1,\ 2,\ 3,\ 4,\ 5,\ 6$$

Step 3: Check for impossible outcomes.
A $3$ is possible because it is on the die. A $7$ is impossible because there is no $7$ on the die.

The die will show only one of the listed numbers when rolled. Even if a $2$ does not appear on one roll, $2$ is still a possible outcome because it could appear on another roll.
