Skill: Identify the tens place

In a whole number, find the ones place first. The tens place is the digit immediately to its left.

For example, find the tens digit and its value in $(347)$.

1. Start at the right:
   • $7$ is in the ones place.
2. Move one place to the left:
   • $4$ is in the tens place.
3. Find the value of the tens digit:
   • $4$ tens means $(4 \times 10 = 40)$.

So, in $(347)$:

• The tens digit is $4$.
• The value of the tens digit is $(40)$.

Remember: the digit tells how many groups of ten there are, and its place value tells the total amount. If the tens digit is $0$, the number has zero groups of ten.
