Skill: Make a given amount with coins

To make an amount, choose coins whose values add up to the target amount.

• Penny $(=1)$ cent
• Nickel $(=5)$ cents
• Dime $(=10)$ cents
• Quarter $(=25)$ cents

Example: Make $(42)$ cents.

1. Start with a quarter: $(25)$ cents.
2. Add a dime:

$$25+10=35$$

3. Add a nickel:

$$35+5=40$$

4. Add two pennies:

$$40+1+1=42$$

So, $(42)$ cents can be made with 1 quarter, 1 dime, 1 nickel, and 2 pennies.

The total value matters, not the number, size, or type of coins. For example, four dimes and two pennies also make $(42)$ cents because $(40+2=42)$.
