Skill: Plot and identify points on the first quadrant of the coordinate plane

A point is named with an ordered pair $(x,y)$.

• The first number, $x$, tells how far to move horizontally from the origin.
• The second number, $y$, tells how far to move vertically.
• In the first quadrant, both numbers are nonnegative whole numbers.

Example: Plot $(4,3)$

1. Start at the origin, $(0,0)$.
2. Look at the $x$-coordinate, $4$. Move 4 units to the right.
3. Look at the $y$-coordinate, $3$. Move 3 units up.
4. Mark the point and label it $(4,3)$.

So, the point $(4,3)$ is 4 units right and 3 units up from the origin.

To identify a point, count from the origin in the same order: count right for $x$ first, then up for $y$. For example, a point 4 units right and 3 units up is $(4,3)$.

Remember that order matters. The point $(3,4)$ would be 3 units right and 4 units up, so it would be in a different location.
