Skill: Recognize quarter turns

A quarter turn is one of four equal parts of a full turn. It changes direction by a right angle, or $90^\circ$.

To recognize one:

1. Look at the object’s starting direction.
2. Look at its ending direction.
3. Check whether it moved one step around a full turn:
   • clockwise: up to right, right to down, down to left, or left to up;
   • anticlockwise: up to left, left to down, down to right, or right to up.
4. If it moved one of these steps, it made a quarter turn.

Example: An arrow starts pointing up. It turns clockwise and finishes pointing right. What turn did it make?

• Start: pointing up.
• Move clockwise one direction: up to right.
• This is one of four equal parts of a full turn.

So, the arrow made a quarter turn clockwise.
