Add zero

Adding zero to a whole-number quantity does not change its value: for sums within 20, $a+0=a$ and $0+a=a$. This identity can be interpreted as taking no additional steps on a number line or combining a set with an empty set, supporting accurate equation reading and later fluency with place value and more general properties of addition; negative numbers and abstract algebraic generalizations are not included.
