Skill: Compare numerals to 100

To compare two numbers, decide which number is greater, which is less, or whether they are equal.

Use these symbols:

• $>$ means “greater than”
• $<$ means “less than”
• $=$ means “equal to”

For two-digit numbers:

1. Compare the tens digits first.
2. If the tens digits are the same, compare the ones digits.
3. Write the correct symbol.

Example: Compare $(47)$ and $(43)$.

Both numbers have $4$ tens, so compare the ones digits:

• $(47)$ has $7$ ones.
• $(43)$ has $3$ ones.
• $7$ is greater than $3$.

So, $(47)$ is greater than $(43)$:

$$47>43$$

On a number line, $(47)$ is to the right of $(43)$, which also shows that $(47)$ is greater.
