Skill: Count backward from 20

Counting backward means saying the numbers in order, with each number being 1 less than the number before it. On a number line, move one step to the left each time.

Example: Count backward from $(14)$ to $0$.

Start at $(14)$. Say the next number by taking away $1$:

$$14,\ 13,\ 12,\ 11,\ 10,\ 9,\ 8,\ 7,\ 6,\ 5,\ 4,\ 3,\ 2,\ 1,\ 0$$

Check the steps:

• $(14)$ becomes $(13)$
• $(13)$ becomes $(12)$
• $(12)$ becomes $(11)$

Keep moving one number left until you reach $0$. Stop at $0$; do not count into negative numbers.
