Equal groups contain the same number of objects, and their total can be found by counting every object once, in an organized way across the groups. The learner distinguishes the number of groups from the number in each group and understands that equal groups provide an early structure for multiplication; skip-counting, multiplication equations, and larger or generalized arrays are not included.
Equal groups have the same number of objects in each group. To find the total, count each object once, moving through one group at a time.
Example: There are 3 groups of 4 stars.
Count the first group: .
Count the second group next: .
Count the third group: .
So, there are 12 stars altogether.
