Skill: Share an object into fourths

To share a whole into fourths, split it into 4 equal parts. Each equal part is called one fourth, written as $\frac14$.

Example: Share this rectangle into fourths.

1. Start with the whole rectangle.
2. Divide it into 4 strips that are the same size.
3. Check that each strip has the same amount of area.
4. Each strip is $\frac14$ of the rectangle.
5. The 4 fourths together make the whole rectangle:

$$\frac14+\frac14+\frac14+\frac14=\text{1 whole}$$

So, the rectangle has been shared into four equal fourths.
