Equal sharing between two groups means partitioning a small whole-number collection so both groups contain the same number, regardless of differences in the objects’ arrangement or appearance. The learner relates the total to two equal addends, determines each group’s amount by fair sharing or counting by twos, and recognizes when one object remains because the total is odd; formal division notation and larger remainders are beyond this understanding.
To share objects equally between two groups, give one object to the first group, then one to the second group. Keep taking turns until you run out.
Example: Share 7 apples between 2 plates.
Put 1 apple on each plate.
Now each plate has 1 apple.
Put 1 more apple on each plate.
Now each plate has 2 apples.
Put 1 more apple on each plate.
Now each plate has 3 apples.
There is 1 apple left, so it cannot make another matching pair.

So, each group gets 3 apples, with 1 apple left over.
