Skill: Estimate quotients

To estimate a quotient, replace the dividend with a nearby number that is easy to divide. Choose a nearby compatible number, or a number that is a multiple of the divisor.

Example:

$$638 \div 7$$

1. Find a nearby number to $(638)$ that is easy to divide by $7$.
   $(630)$ is close to $(638)$, and it is a multiple of $7$.

2. Divide the compatible number:

$$630 \div 7 = 90$$

3. State the estimate:

$$638 \div 7 \approx 90$$

So, the quotient is about $(90)$. This makes sense because $(90 \times 7=630)$, which is close to $(638)$.
