Skill: Identify fractions equal to one whole

A fraction equals one whole when the numerator and denominator are the same.

• The denominator tells how many equal parts make the whole.
• The numerator tells how many of those parts we have.

For example, consider $\frac{4}{4}$.

1. The denominator, $4$, means the whole is divided into $4$ equal parts.
2. The numerator, $4$, means we have all $4$ parts.
3. Having all the parts makes one whole.

So,

$$\frac{4}{4}=1$$

On a number line, $\frac{4}{4}$ is at the same point as $1$. Fractions such as $\frac{2}{2}$, $\frac{3}{3}$, and $\frac{8}{8}$ also equal one whole.
