A unit fraction represents exactly one of a whole divided into equal parts and is written with a numerator of 1, such as $\frac12, \frac13, \frac14, \frac16,$ or $\frac18$ . The denominator names the number of equal parts and determines the size of each part; on area models and number lines, a unit fraction is one equal segment from zero to one. This understanding excludes generalizing to arbitrary denominators or more advanced fraction operations.

A unit fraction names exactly one equal part of a whole.

To identify a unit fraction:

Look at the numerator, the top number.
If the numerator is $1$ , the fraction is a unit fraction.
The denominator, the bottom number, tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into.

Example: Is $\frac{1}{6}$ a unit fraction?

The numerator is $1$ .
The denominator is $6$ , so the whole is divided into $6$ equal parts.
$\frac{1}{6}$ means one of those six equal parts.

Therefore, $\frac{1}{6}$ is a unit fraction.
