Skill: Read decimals to hundredths

Look at the digits on both sides of the decimal point.

• Digits before the decimal point show the whole number.
• The first digit after the decimal point is the tenths place.
• The second digit after the decimal point is the hundredths place.

Example: Read $(3.27)$

1. The $3$ is before the decimal point, so it means three whole ones.
2. The $2$ is in the tenths place.
3. The $7$ is in the hundredths place.
4. Together, the digits after the decimal point make $(27)$ hundredths.

So, $(3.27)$ is read:

three and twenty-seven hundredths

A zero at the end does not change the amount. For example, $(3.27)$ and $(3.270)$ have the same value, but when reading decimals to the hundredths place, focus on the first two digits after the decimal point.
