Division asks: How many equal groups are there, or how many are in each group?

To recall a division fact, think of its related multiplication fact. For example, to solve:

$$24 \div 6$$

1. Ask: What number multiplied by $6$ equals $24$?

$$6 \times ? = 24$$

2. Recall that:

$$6 \times 4 = 24$$

3. Therefore:

$$24 \div 6 = 4$$

So, $24$ can be split into $6$ equal groups with $4$ in each group.

Remember, division is not commutative: $24 \div 6$ is not the same as $6 \div 24$. Division facts through $10 \times 10$ have whole-number answers, and $0 \div 6 = 0$. Division by $0$ is undefined.
