An angle shows how much one ray turns to line up with another ray. The rays must share the same endpoint.

Do not focus on:

  • how long the rays are;
  • how much space is between them.

Instead, imagine turning one ray around the shared endpoint.

Example:
A ray starts at point OO and points straight up. Another ray starts at OO and points straight right. What kind of turn is the angle?

  1. Find the common endpoint: it is OO.
  2. Imagine turning the upward ray around OO until it points to the right.
  3. This is a turn that makes one corner of a square. It is a quarter turn.
  4. A quarter turn is also called a right angle.

The rays could be very short or very long, but the angle would still be the same because the amount of turn has not changed.
