Skill: Relate hundredths to fractions and decimals

A hundredth is one of 100 equal parts of a whole:

$$1\text{ hundredth}=\frac{1}{100}=0.01$$

The denominator $(100)$ tells us that the whole is divided into 100 equal parts.

Example: Represent 23 hundredths

Step 1: Write the fraction.
Twenty-three hundredths means 23 parts out of 100:

$$\frac{23}{100}$$

Step 2: Write the decimal.
The second digit to the right of the decimal point shows hundredths. Therefore:

$$\frac{23}{100}=0.23$$

So, 23 hundredths can be written as:

$$\boxed{\frac{23}{100}=0.23}$$

Step 3: Locate it on a number line.
On a number line from $0$ to $1$, divide the whole into 100 equal parts. The point for $(23)$ hundredths is the $(23)$rd small mark after $0$:

$$0 \quad \cdots \quad 0.23 \quad \cdots \quad 1$$

Remember that one tenth is equal to ten hundredths:

$$\frac{1}{10}=\frac{10}{100}=0.10$$
