Skill: Write whole numbers in word form

To write a whole number in word form:

1. Separate the number into a thousands group and a ones group.
2. Read the thousands group, then say thousand.
3. Read the hundreds, tens, and ones in the remaining group.
4. Skip any place with a zero.
5. Hyphenate numbers from twenty-one through ninety-nine when they are not exact tens.

Example: Write $(24{,}306)$ in word form.

Step 1: Group the digits.

$$24\mid306$$

The $(24)$ is the thousands group, and $(306)$ is the ones group.

Step 2: Read the thousands group.

$(24)$ is twenty-four, so $(24{,}000)$ is twenty-four thousand.

Step 3: Read the remaining group.

The number $(306)$ has:

• $3$ hundreds: three hundred
• $0$ tens: skip the tens place
• $6$ ones: six

So $(306)$ is three hundred six.

Step 4: Put the parts together.

$$24{,}306=\boxed{\text{twenty-four thousand three hundred six}}$$

Do not say “zero tens,” and do not write a place-value word for a digit that is $0$.
