Choosing an appropriate data display means matching the representation to the data and the question: bar graphs for categorical frequencies, dot plots for individual numerical values, histograms for numerical data grouped into intervals, and box plots for summarizing and comparing distributions. The choice preserves meaningful features such as frequencies, clusters, gaps, center, and spread rather than suggesting patterns the data do not support; selecting displays for bivariate relationships or advanced statistical graphics is not included.
The best data display depends on what kind of data you have and what you want to see.
A teacher records the number of books read by students:
Step 1: Identify the type of data.
The data are numbers, so they are numerical data.
Step 2: Decide what the display should show.
There are only values, and we want to see each student’s number of books. The repeated values, gaps, and overall shape will be useful.
Step 3: Choose the display.
A dot plot is the best choice because it shows every individual value. A dot plot would look like this:
