Categorical data classify observations by qualitative attributes or group membership, such as color, transportation mode, or type of pet, rather than measuring numerical amounts. The understanding includes defining clear, non-overlapping response categories, recording each observation consistently, and organizing the results in a tally or frequency table so that category counts can be compared and later represented in a bar graph. This scope excludes more advanced statistical modeling, inference, and analysis of continuous or multivariable data.
Categorical data place each observation into a group based on a quality or type, not a numerical measurement. Examples include favorite color, type of pet, or way of getting to school.

The tally marks show each response as it is recorded. A group of five is written as four vertical marks crossed by a fifth mark, making it easier to count.
