Skill: Compare large whole numbers

To compare large whole numbers, line up their place values and compare digits from left to right. Start with the greatest place value. The first place where the digits are different tells you which number is greater.

Example

Compare:

$$5{,}604{,}019 \quad \text{and} \quad 5{,}640{,}019$$

1. Compare the millions digits:
   Both numbers have $5$ millions, so they are equal so far.

2. Compare the hundred-thousands digits:
   Both numbers have $6$ hundred-thousands, so they are still equal.

3. Compare the ten-thousands digits:
   The first number has $0$ ten-thousands, while the second number has $4$ ten-thousands.

4. Since $4>0$, the second number is greater. We do not need to compare the remaining digits.

Therefore,

$$5{,}604{,}019<5{,}640{,}019$$

Remember: Compare from left to right, and stop at the first place where the digits differ. A zero in a place does not change this process; it simply means that place has a value of zero.
